CHAPTER 6

Okay, Ana, what do you want to do?” Waylon’s voice is steady as he looks across the room at her. “We can make a call to the Sheriff, or I can personally see to it that Anthony, Julia, and their friends pack up and leave King Mountain for good.” He pauses for effect, his gaze hardening. “Or, maybe you’d prefer we handle this old school – teach Anthony a lesson he won’t forget.”

I watch Ana closely, trying to gauge her reaction. She sits on the edge of my couch, hands clasped tightly in her lap, her eyes wide with uncertainty. I can almost hear the cogs turning in her head, wondering if Waylon’s serious about the offer to kick Anthony’s ass.

I know all too well the lengths Waylon and I—and the rest of the guys—will go to protect the women on this mountain. Lucas’s dark humor about knowing how and where to hide bodies isn’t just talk. We’ve never had to go there, not since I arrived here anyway, but everyone knows it’s an unspoken promise we make to anyone we protect.

Ana worries her plump lower lip between her teeth, gaze flickering uncertainly between Waylon and me, seated across from her on the battered couch. The instant I raised him on the radio to report the situation, Waylon dropped everything and hustled up here.

“I...I don’t know,” she answers in a small voice. “Part of me feels like I should get the authorities involved. But what does it do to my life if I file a report and charges?”

Her jaw tightens, and her turmoil is plain as day. “I also worry that it’ll turn into some big He Said She Said drama,” she continues in a steadier tone. “I mean, since it’s my word against Anthony’s, who knows if anything would stick or if I’d be putting myself through a ton of unnecessary bullshit for nothing? I’m the new person in the friend group. Of course, they’d protect their friend.”

“Ana,” Waylon says carefully. “If you want to press charges, don’t worry about What Ifs. We’ll stand with you and have your back. We believe your account of things. This isn’t a situation a woman makes up for shits and giggles.”

“Waylon,” she starts, then pauses. She considers the options and makes a choice, her voice soft but firm. “I don’t want any more trouble. Could you just...could you make sure they leave?”

Waylon nods, his features softening a fraction. “Of course. You have my word they’ll be gone before nightfall.”

“Thank you,” she murmurs, relief washing over her face.

I stand, the weight of the situation pressing down on me. It’s one thing to chase off some troublemakers; it’s another to see Ana looking so damn vulnerable. A protective fire burns in my chest, one that’s been building since the moment I laid eyes on her.

“Let’s get this sorted then,” Waylon says. “Do you want to come with us to get your things? Or one of us can do it for you.”

Ana pauses, then looks up, a determined look in her green eyes.
